Troubleshooting Fax Machines
For years fax machines have been an indispensable business tool. They allow for the almost instantaneous transfer of important documents. But like all machines, they are subject to breakdowns. For owners of these machines being able to troubleshoot the problem and fix it can save time and money. There are some simple steps people can take to get their fax machines up and running again.
If your fax machine stops running the first thing you should do is check to make sure it is plugged in. Next make sure the machine is securely connected to the phone line. Often these simple steps will solve the problem. If the power or the phone connection is not the problem, print a test page. If the test page is good, the problem may be with the machine sending the fax. If the test page has streaks or blotches it is a problem with your machine. Next open the document feed area and clean all surfaces with a slightly damp cloth. Use glass cleaner of the glass plate. Check the ink or toner cartridge. If it is empty or leaking replace it and clean up the entire area thoroughly. Otherwise shake it gently and put it back in place. Check for paper jams. Make sure paper is being fed properly and is coming out of the fax machine straight. If there is a paper jam, gently pull the paper out in the direction it normally flows. Pulling it in the other direction could damage the small gears and sensors.
Following the above mentioned procedure should allow you to identify any minor problems with your fax machines. Often just cleaning the machine and shaking the toner is all that is required to get the fax machine humming happily again. If your machine does not respond even after you have thoroughly checked and cleaned it there is a surefire way to address the problem. Contact howstuffworks.com and let them help you.
