History of Kyocera Printing Company
The history of Kyocera Printing Company can be traced back to the founding of the Kyoto Ceramic Co. Ltd. in 1959. It was founded by Kazuo Inamori in Kyoto, Japan. The company’s name was only changed to Kyocera Printing Company in 1982. This move can be attributed to the evolution which the company had undergone through five decades. It had merged with different companies and acquired a few as well.
Kyocera originally had the company name Kyoto Ceramic to reflect its first product, the kelcima, which is a ceramic insulator that was used for television picture tubes at that time. In the 1960s, Kyocera developed ceramic semiconductor products following the emergence of Silicon Valley. Kyocera introduced one of the first laptop models powered by batteries in 1982 after merging with Cybernet Electronics Corp. in 1979.
These mergers and acquisitions lead to the beginning and end of some products. Kyocera had manufactured digital cameras as well as film from 1983 up to 2005 after acquiring Yashica Co. Ltd. The company had also produced audio products such as cassette players, CD players, receivers, and turntables during the 1980s up until 1989 through KLH. In the same year, it had acquired Elco Corporation which manufactured electronic connectors.
Global expansion came on the way in the 1990s starting with AVX Corporation which manufacturer electronic components. Kyocera had also founded sister companies including Kyocera Solar Corp. in Japan on 1996 and Kyocera Solar Inc. in the U.S. on 1999. These concentrated on solar energy products. Mita Industrial Co., Ltd. was also added on its list on 2000. This brought to birth Kyocera Mita Corporation in Osaka, Japan with offices in over 25 countries. QUALCOMM’s mobile phone technology was also added to Kyocera on the same year.
Kyocera Wireless Corp. founded Kyocera Wireless India which had led to more acquisitions for wireless technology. Lastly, in 2008 it merged with Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. including its operations all over the world.
Today, Kyocera is now globally known for printers, electronic devices, digital imaging systems, telecommunications equipment, semiconductor items, and ceramic based products.
